Hi there! My name is Sanne and I’m a 22-year-old student from Groningen. In a little less than two months me and my friend Marije are undertaking our first long-term backpacking trip! We have known each other for ten years already, ever since the first form (secondary school) and together we have travelled a bit through Europe whenever there was a cheap Ryanair or train ticket available, for example to Antwerp, Gent, Milan, and Alghero. But a backpacking adventure of more than six months is something completely different of course!
On the 28th of December we fly from Amsterdam to Frankfurt and from there to the booming city of Shanghai! Our plan is to travel along the coastline of China (visiting a.o. Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Nanning) and then take a train from Nanning to Hanoi in Vietnam. There we will also follow a coastal route leading us from the famous Ha Long Bay in the North to Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in the South. From HCM-City we will take a bus to Phnom Penh and spend two weeks in Cambodia, with of course a visit to Angor Wat! The last country we will visit together is Thailand where we will spend a little over three weeks and plan on at least visiting one of the legendary full moon parties on the island of Ko Samui in the south of the country.
On the 30th of March I’m flying towards Auckland, New Zealand, with a little stop at Kuala Lumpur, on my own! Marije is planning on heading to the States after our three months together. I’ll probably spend about six weeks in NZ before booking a ticket to Melbourne. Naturally I’ll have to wait and see how long I can finance it, but hopefully I can stay another three months travelling through Australia! Well, and that’s as far as the planning goes! I’m really excited to leave and time seems to be dragging on while I’m writing my master thesis. Counting down the days…
